Corfe Castle
Description
An account of the resource
Photographs of Corfe Castle and its surroundings. Corfe, in Dorset, was the site of the murder of Edward the Martyr in 978 in circumstances which are still debated, allowing Æthelræd to come to the throne. The photographs are taken around the ring of the natural hill upon which Corfe Castle (now ruined), sits. They are also of memorial plaques in the village. The castle is much later, of course. and in Saxon times there was probably some form of stronghold.

Yeavering: Sparrow Flight
Description
An account of the resource
This image depicts a sparrow in flight across Yeavering to provide us with a bird's eye view. The analogy of a sparrow flying through a Great Hall was first documented by Bede (II.13). Paulinus had tried to persuade Edwin to become a Christian, but Edwin wished to consult his advisers and friends. This was the advice of one counsellor after hearing the chief Priest Coifi recommend that Edwin follow the new Christian religion:
"Another of the king's chief men signified his agreement with this prudent argument, and went on to say:
'Your Majesty, when we compare the present life of man on earth with that time of which we have no knowledge, it seems to me like the swift flight of a single sparrow through the banqueting-hall where you are sitting at dinner on a winter's day with your thegns and counsellors. In the midst there is a comforting fire to warm the hall; outside, the storms of winter rain or snow are raging. This sparrow flies swiftly in through one door of the hall, and out through another. While he is inside, he is safe from the winter storms; but after a few moments of comfort, he vanishes from sight into the wintry world from which he came. Even so, man appears on earth for a little while; but of what went before this life or of what follows, we know nothing. Therefore, if this new teaching has brought any more certain knowledge, it seems only right that we should follow it.'
The other elders and counsellors of the king, under God's guidance, gave similar advice."

The Meon Valley - the Coming of Christianity
Description
An account of the resource
The River Meon flows through the Meon Valley in Hampshire and runs from East Meon on the South Downs, through the Valley to the Solent at Titchfield Haven. The River Meon formed the boundary between the West Saxons (Wessex) and the South Saxons (Sussex). It gave its name, which derives from a Celtic word meaning 'swift one', to the Meonwara (or Meonsæte) the people of Jutish origin who colonised the East bank of the River in the 5th & 6th centuries
These early Saxons who had probably come via Kent and the Isle of Wight were pagans.
Christianity was brought to the Jutish/Saxon people of the Meon Valley in the latter part of the 7th Century (681-686) by a Benedictine monk called Wilfrid; Wilfrid came from the Northumbria.
The story of Wilfrid and the conversion of the Meon Valley people to Christianity is told in the attachment.
Additional information is available at www.wilfrid-meon-pilgrimage.co.uk and at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilfrid
One of the churches of the Meon Valley is Corhampton Saxon Church, built in 1020, and used as a place of Christian worship since the Saxon era. 1066 - we won one & we lost one (Stamford Bridge & Hastings)
Description
An account of the resource
1066 (October 14th) is etched on every English persons' mind as the date in which the English under King Harold Godwinson lost the battle of Hastings to William Duke of Normandy who went on to conquer England.
What is less well known is just 19 days before Hastings on 25th September 1066, 273 miles North, King Harold led the English Saxon army to an overwhelming victory against the invading Vikings at the battle of Stamford Bridge, 8 miles north of York.
The attachment, written by Rear Admiral (retired) Guy Liardet, Cahirman of the Friends of Corhampton Saxon Church, brings to life and links the stories of these two great battles.
This storyline was used by the Friends as a script for a story-telling learning activity at the Saxon school learning day and Festivals in the Meon Valley in 2010. (see separate Woruldhord submissions on these events)

Saxon School Learning Day - Corhampton Saxon Church & Meonstoke School
Description
An account of the resource
miles from Wintonceastre (Winchester), the capital of the Saxon kingdom of Wessex and of Saxon England. They are located on opposite banks of the River Meon which runs from East Meon on the South Downs, through the Meon Valley to the Solent at Titchfield Haven. The River Meon formed the boundary between the West Saxons (Wessex) and the South Saxons (Sussex). It gave its name, which derives from a Celtic word meaning 'swift one', to the Meonwara (or Meonsæte) the people of Jutish origin who colonised the East bank of the river Meon in the 5th & 6th centuries. Corhampton Church, which was built in 1020 when Cnute was King of Wessex and England, has been a place of Christian worship for over 1000 years. Excavations in the 20th century led to the discovery close to the Church of Saxon/Jutish cemeteries and a Saxon village.
The Friends of Corhampton Church, working with the staff of Meonstoke School and Saxon heritage organisations offered a learning day at the Church for the 80 pupils of the school in April 2010.
The attachments tell the story of this event and what was achieved.
