CCCC MS 419 - Sermo Lupi
Description
An account of the resource
The first four pages of Wulfstan's Sermo Lupi ad Anglos, CCCC MS 419, pp. 95-8. This manuscript contains fifteen Old English Homilies by Wulfstan and others. Described by Ker (1957) pp. 115-6, and dated to the first half of the eleventh century. Sermo Lupi survives in five manuscripts; CCCC MS 419 is designated MS B in Napier's Wulfstan (1883). The homily opens with the rubric 'Lar Spell' and begins 'Leofan men. Gecnaƿað þat soð is'... The opening L, like many of the initials, is in red with a ball and crescent decoration. Sermo Lupi was composed c.1010-1016 and is the most famous of Wulfstan's homilies. All these images are © Parker Library.
The full image collection is available on the Parker Library website, along with a detailed manuscript description: http://parkerweb.stanford.edu/parker/actions/manuscript_description_long_display.do?ms_no=419

The Alfred Jewel
Description
An account of the resource
Ashmolean Museum inventory no. AN1836p.135.371.
Gold, rock crystal, enamel. Dated to the late 9th century. Gold tear-drop shaped frame holds an enamel base beneath a polished rock crystal, possibly a reused piece from an older object. The separate back plate is held in place by dog-toothed claws, and the jewel terminates in a stylised animal head. The cloisonné enamel inlay depicts a green robed figure holding two plant stems or flowers, and has been interpreted as a personification of sight. The piece may be the head of an aestel or pointer used in the reading of manuscripts. The inscription reads +AELFREDMECH/EH/TGEWYRCAN 'Alfred ordered me to be made', leading some to posit a connection with King Alfred's programme for the renewal of learning in England, and specifically with the preface to the Old English translation of Gregory's 'Pastoral Care' which mentions that a copy of the work was to be sent to each bishopric accompanied by an 'aestel worth 50 mancuses'.

Old English Nerthus Lexical Database (Updated Version July 2014)
Description
An account of the resource
For the latest version please see the following:
Nerthus. A lexical database of Old English. The initial headword list 2007-2009. Working Papers in Early English Lexicology and Lexicography 1 (www.nerthusproject.com/wpeelex)
Nerthus. Outline of a Lexicon of Old English. Working Papers in Early English Lexicology and Lexicography 3 (www.nerthusproject.com/wpeelex)
The aim of the Nerthus project is to provide an exhaustive description of the lexicon of Old English on the grounds of a functionally oriented linguistic theory. In its present state, the lexical database Nerthus contains ca. 30,000 entries, which can be accessed online by a web browser (www.nerthusproject.com). In the short run, Nerthus will be
concerned with word-formation phenomena mainly: while the current version offers the historical dimension, the synchronic part of the project, involving a detailed analysis of zero-derivation, affixation and compounding, is still in progress. In the medium run, the description of the lexicon of Old English will expand further into syntax by relating meaning definitions to logical structures of linguistic expressions containing lexical and syntactic information, as proposed by functional theories of language.

The Franks Casket
Description
An account of the resource
AN00469340_001_l. Franks Casket. Lidded rectangular box made of whale-bone, carved on the sides and top in relief with scenes from Roman, Jewish, Christian and Germanic tradition. The base is constructed from four sides slotted and pegged into corner uprights, the bottom plates fitted into grooves at the base of the sides. It possibly stood on four low feet. Only one decorative panel now survives in the lid, the remaining elements being almost certainly replacements. There are scars left by lost metal fittings on the exterior - handle, lock, hasps and hinges - and crude internal repairs. The five surviving decorated panels are variously accompanied by carved texts in Old English and Latin, using both conventional and encoded runes as well as Insular script, in a variety of orientations. Each side is bordered by a long descriptive text and three contain additional labels; the lid panel has only the latter, though a longer text may originally have accompanied it. The front is divided in two: the left half shows a composite scene from the Weland the Smith legend, the right half, the Adoration of the Magi, with the label 'mægi' carved above the kings. The main inscription takes the form of a riddling alliterative verse about the casket's origin. The left-hand end depicts Romulus and Remus nurtured by the wolf with an inscription describing the scene. The back panel shows the capture of Jerusalem in AD 70 by the Roman general, later emperor, Titus: labels on the two lower corners read 'dom' = 'judgment', and 'gisl' = 'hostage' respectively. The main inscription is in a mixture of Old English, Latin, runes and insular script. The right-hand end poses special problems of interpretation. The apparently episodic scene is evidently from Germanic legend but has not been satisfactorily identified. Three labels read: 'risci' = 'rush', 'wudu' = 'wood' and 'bita' = 'biter'. The main runic text is in alliterative verse partly encoded by substituting cryptic forms for most of its vowels and perhaps certain other letters. The lid appears to depict an episode relating to the Germanic hero Egil and has the single label 'aegili' = 'Egil'.

Iron Seax
Description
An account of the resource
AN00227879_001_l. Iron seax, with a straight cutting edge and sharply angled back, the tang offset from the blade. One face of the blade was inset with eight decorative panels, but two are now missing. They are separated from each other by short, vertical strips of twisted silver and copper wire. The panels are inlaid with silver and niello, except for one, which is inlaid with brass. The triangular panel at the angle of the back contains a winged creature, the wing terminating in an acanthus leaf, and the body decorated with double nicks. Next to it is an oblong field with a symmetrical acanthus plant. The panels to the right of this are arranged in two rows of three narrow rectangular fields, but only one survives in the top row. It contains an undulating foliate scroll. The first panel of the second row is inscribed in Old English; the second, inlaid with brass. The last field is very worn, and contains an S-shaped animal, its body pierced by a strand. The panels are set above a long narrow strip with pendent silver triangles, which runs along the centre of the blade. It is composed of alternate rectangular panels of silver and brass, bordered by lengths of twisted copper and silver wire. The other face of the blade has a similar median strip, but here the rectangular panels are far more regular, creating a chequered effect. A second strip, also bordered by twisted polychrome wires, runs along the back of the blade. It is linked to the one below by two short lengths of twisted silver and copper wire. The panel thus created contains another Old English inscription, in letters of silver wire facing the back of the blade. The spine of the blade was also inlaid with twisted silver and copper wires, alternate silver and brass rectangular panels, and a triangular terminal of silver and copper wires at the angle of the blade. Much of this decoration is now missing. All these images are © Trustees of the British Museum.
