Description

Reconstruction of a Anglo-Saxon sunken hut at Bede's World, nr Jarrow. These were typical of the Germanic timber-constructed buildings, also known as Grubenhäuser. Usually a rectangular pit up to 1m deep, 3x4m in dimension inside, with a posthole near the centre at each end. The pit may have been covered with planks to provide a floor.
